William Dowling R.S. was born in 1746.2 He married Rebecca Walker, daughter of Nathaniel Walker and Marian unknown, circa 1767 at Virginia, USA.3,1 William Dowling R.S. died circa 1782 at Bamberg, Bamberg, South Carolina, USA.4,5 He DFS Notes: Wm. in SC by Summer 1770 (Two years before father Robert came there) SC Land Grant to William in 1771 - 60 acres on Flat Creek in Craven Co. (Adjoining owners William Breton and a widow Gibson) Paid King's 'quit Rent' in Jan. 1774 in area now part of Darlington County. 1775 moved 100 mi SW to Orangeburg District and purchased 100 acre tract on the Little Salkehatchee at Cyprus Pond from one Thomas Ford. Near present-day Bamberg, SC. Fought with 'Swampfox' Francis Marion at hopeless defense of Charleston and afterwards. Died about 1782 Caught at home in 1780's by Tories and shot dead while young (12 year-old son Jabez watched.3 A Dowling Family of the South (DFS) shows Robert the father of William with the mother unknown. The basis for this is the following statement; "Yet a century later an elderly grandson, DEMPSEY Dowling, did remember that she [the wife of Robert's father and Williams's mother] was of Virginia birth and that she had borne one child: his half-uncle WILLIAM." DFS does not name Robert's father or any brothers.
The book The ?Dowling Family ?- Their Ancestors and Descendants (TDF) states that David Dowling, Robert Dowling RS and William Dowling RS were brothers and sons of Michael and Mary (unknown) Dowling. (David is mentioned in a request by his mother Mary for land based on Michael's service fighting Indians under Capt. Nelson of SC.)
Based on the estimated birth dates for Wm. and Robt., if Robt. was William's father he would have been 11 when Wm. was born. Assuming the birth dates are reasonable accurate this makes unlikely that William was the son of Robert.
TDF also discusses another Robert Dowling who was born in Augusta Co. VA, a runaway servant who was listed in court documents in that county at the same time that Robert Dowling RS was in South Carolina. Many have gotten these two Roberts mixed up.3 He witnessed the Milt-Note of an unknown person in 1779.

Jemima Dowling was born on 1 March 1807 at Jeffries Creek, Florence, South Carolina, USA.1 She married Benjamin Hildreth in August 1824 at South Carolina, USA.1,2 Jemima Dowling and Benjamin Hildreth Jemima married Benjamin Hildreth. They had 13 children, including Travis Hildreth. Travis married Elizabeth Hayes; one of their children was George. George Hildreth married Emma Missouri Mixson; one of their children was John Horace Hildreth, my grandfather.
Here's some of the info I have from my grandfather:
Benjamin was born in Charleston, SC, on March 15, 1802. He was christened April 10, 1803, at Independent Congregational Church in Charleston. At age 8 he was indentured as an umbrella maker. After completion of his indenture term and at age 21, he married Jemima Dowling, who was 16. Their first 3 children were apparently born in SC, while the remaining 10 (13 in all) were born apparently in Alabama. Benjamin and Jemima moved to Dale County Alabama in about 1830. (While several of the historical records refer to "Dale County", I think Dale was later divided and that we should assume "Coffee County" should be substituted in all instances.) The fathers of both Benjamin and Jemima were Methodist ministers known as "Circuit Riders." They were greatly involved in founding Old Tabernacle Church located in Coffee County, Alabama. About 1860, Benjamin was transferred to Butler County, Alabama, to serve the Methodist churches in that area. He died Nov. 25, 1868, and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Greenville, Alabama. After the death of her husband, she made her home with her younger son, Rev. Jackson Hildreth. She died Feb. 8, 1891. She was buried at Carmichael's Chapel, Coffee County (now Enterprise City Cemetery).3 Jemima Dowling The youngest child of ROBERT'S youngest son was the daughter JEMIMA. She was born in the Jeffries Creek area of South Carolina on March 1, 1807. At the age of sixteen this Dowling girl married a twenty-one year old South Carolinian named Benjamin J. Hildreth. on 1 March 1807 at South Carolina, USA.4 As of August 1824,her married name was Hildreth.1
