Mary unknown was born circa 1700 at Virginia, USA.1 She married Michael Dowling, son of Robert Dowling, before 1730.1 Mary unknown died after 1746 at South Carolina, USA.1 She died before 1754 at Virginia, USA.
A Dowling Family of the South (DFS) shows Robert the father of William with the mother unknown. The basis for this is the following statement; "Yet a century later an elderly grandson, DEMPSEY Dowling, did remember that she [the wife of Robert's father and Williams's mother] was of Virginia birth and that she had borne one child: his half-uncle WILLIAM." DFS does not name Robert's father or any brothers.
The book The ?Dowling Family ?- Their Ancestors and Descendants (TDF) states that David Dowling, Robert Dowling RS and William Dowling RS were brothers and sons of Michael and Mary (unknown) Dowling. (David is mentioned in a request by his mother Mary for land based on Michael's service fighting Indians under Capt. Nelson of SC.)
Based on the estimated birth dates for Wm. and Robt., if Robt. was William's father he would have been 11 when Wm. was born. Assuming the birth dates are reasonable accurate this makes unlikely that William was the son of Robert.
TDF also discusses another Robert Dowling who was born in Augusta Co. VA, a runaway servant who was listed in court documents in that county at the same time that Robert Dowling RS was in South Carolina. Many have gotten these two Roberts mixed up. with Robert Dowling R.S. and William Dowling R.S.2 As of before 1730,her married name was Dowling.1

The house was one mile east of Felicity, Franklin Township, OH, formerly owned by staunch Abolitionist, Jonathan P. Myers. Built before the Civil War, the Myers brick and frame house served as a "safe house" link in the "under-ground railway" for escaping slaves on their way to freedom. The bricks in the house were made from the clay beds on the farm and burned in Myers' own kiln. The secret cellar hide-away so carefully built under the house was accessible only through a small trap door in the kitchen, concealed underneath Mrs. Myers' flour barrel! Ventilation for the secret "dungeon" room was cunningly provided by laying the brick walls in a zigzag pattern, so that air was admitted, but no light. George A.
