Sgt Edmund Thomas1
M, b. 4 September 1820, d. circa 25 September 1862
Family | Martha Dowling b. 17 Mar 1827, d. 10 Mar 1875 |
Sgt Edmund Thomas was born on 4 September 1820 at Liberty, Georgia, USA.1 He married Martha Dowling, daughter of Darling Wesley Dowling and Sophie Davis, in 1847.1 Sgt Edmund Thomas died circa 25 September 1862 at Fort Delaware, New Castle, Delaware, USA.1
He The son of Banner Thomas and Mary Mixon, Edmund Thomas was born and farmed near Blackshear, Georgia. He followed his father's example in his occupation, public service and military commitment.
Edmund Thomas married twenty year old Martha Dowling, daughter of Darling Dowling and Sophia Davis in 1847. At least eight children followed: John, Mary, Martha, Margaret, Marzilla, Banner M., Sophia and Edmond.
In December 1857, the part of Ware County where the Thomases lived was cut into the new Georgia county named for President Franklin Pierce. Edmund Thomas served as tax collector for Pierce County in 1858 and 1859. He is named on the historical marker in front of the courthouse in Blackshear as the first county tax collector.
On 4 March 1862, Edmund Thomas enlisted for "three years or the war" in Company A, 50th Georgia Infantry, with many of his neighbors and family. He served as a sergeant in Captain John T. Wilson's Company known as the Satilla Rangers.
He was captured by federal forces on the Company's march north. After being treated at the United States Army Hospital in Frederick, Maryland, he was transferred to Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island as of 19 September 1862.
Sgt. Thomas died at Fort Delaware, probably on 25 September, and according to a prisoner's diary was buried on Pea Patch Island.
In 1875 under the aegis of the United States Quartermaster General the remains of Confederate and Union men who died on the island before June 1863 were disinterred and re-interred at Finn's Point National Cemetery in New Jersey. Not all of the remains were identified.
When Martha Dowling Thomas died, her children placed a memorial to their parents in the High Bluff Cemetery where generations of the family were buried. It reads: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MARTHA THOMAS. BORN MARCH THE 17 1827, DIED MARCH THE 10 1875, AGE 47 YEARS 11 MONTHS 23 DAYES. EDMUND THOMAS, HUSBAND OF MARTHA THOMAS, WAS BORN SEPT THE 4 1820.
