Michael Dowling b. c 1698, d. b 1751

Mary unknown was born circa 1700 at Virginia, United States.1 She married Michael Dowling, son of Robert Dowling, before 1730.1 Mary unknown died after 1746 at South Carolina, United States.1 She died before 1754 at Virginia, United States.
A Dowling Family of the South (DFS) shows Robert the father of William with the mother unknown. The basis for this is the following statement; "Yet a century later an elderly grandson, DEMPSEY Dowling, did remember that she [the wife of Robert's father and Williams's mother] was of Virginia birth and that she had borne one child: his half-uncle WILLIAM." DFS does not name Robert's father or any brothers.

The book The ?Dowling Family ?- Their Ancestors and Descendants (TDF) states that David Dowling, Robert Dowling RS and William Dowling RS were brothers and sons of Michael and Mary (unknown) Dowling. (David is mentioned in a request by his mother Mary for land based on Michael's service fighting Indians under Capt. Nelson of SC.)

Based on the estimated birth dates for Wm. and Robt., if Robt. was William's father he would have been 11 when Wm. was born. Assuming the birth dates are reasonable accurate this makes unlikely that William was the son of Robert.

TDF also discusses another Robert Dowling who was born in Augusta Co. VA, a runaway servant who was listed in court documents in that county at the same time that Robert Dowling RS was in South Carolina. Many have gotten these two Roberts mixed up. with Robert Dowling R.S. and William Dowling R.S.1 As of before 1730,her married name was Dowling.1

When his wife Mabel died 11 years later in 1968, it was discovered that no probate papers had ever been filed for him. At that time a death certificate was filed in Indian River County, Florida for him. No other probate was done for Walter George Wood.9
He I remember in 1958 seeing a house that I was told Walter George Wood (my grandfather) grew up in. This was probably in 1954 or 1958. The house was one mile east of Felicity, Franklin Township, OH, formerly owned by staunch Abolitionist, Jonathan P. Myers. Built before the Civil War, the Myers brick and frame house served as a "safe house" link in the "under-ground railway" for escaping slaves on their way to freedom. The bricks in the house were made from the clay beds on the farm and burned in Myers' own kiln. The secret cellar hide-away so carefully built under the house was accessible only through a small trap door in the kitchen, concealed underneath Mrs. Myers' flour barrel! Ventilation for the secret "dungeon" room was cunningly provided by laying the brick walls in a zigzag pattern, so that air was admitted, but no light. George A. Wood and his wife sold this farm in 1891 shortly before the family moved to Science Hill, KY in 1875 at Wood family home, Clermont, Ohio, United States.9 He lived with George Absalom Wood and Lucy Ann Turner in 1876 at Franklin Township, Felicity, Clermont, Ohio, United States.10 Walter George Wood appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 in the household of George Absalom Wood and Lucy Ann Turner at Franklin Township, Clermont, Ohio, United States.11 Walter George Wood lived with George Absalom Wood and Lucy Ann Turner on 13 April 1891 at Science Hill, Pulaski, Kentucky, United States.10

As religion had always played an important role in Lucy Ann's life, on June 12, 1892 as soon as the family was settled in their new home, she and her daughter Mary together with sons Carl and Walter joined the Union Church (Church of Christ) at Science Hill, KY, by letter from Bethel (OH) Christian Church. Frank, the eldest son, did not join until August 23, 1893, shocked into full awareness of his own mortality by his father's sudden death on May 30, 1893 at the age of 44 years, and perhaps already thinking ahead to his marriage with neighbor, Emma Ivens.
