The home of George Absolum Wood and Lucy Ann Turner Wood where they lived in the late 1800s. This is from a slide taken in 1954 of a tintype photograph dating back to the mid-1800s.
I believe this to be the same house as above. Photograph taken between 1954 and 1961. I now know the location of this house based upon information from a newly found cousin: He sent me a genealogy that contained the following: (In) "1876, George A. Wood (my great grandfather) purchased a farm one mile east of Felicity, Franklin Township. Before George and Lucy Wood occupied it, it was owned by Jonathan P. Myers who is reported to be a staunch abolitionist. Built before the Civil War, the Myers brick and frame house served as a "safe house" link in the underground railway for escaping slaves on their way to freedom. The bricks in the house were made from the clay beds on the farm and burned in Myers' own kiln. The secret cellar hideaway so carefully built under the house was accessible only through a small trap door in the kitchen, concealed underneath Mrs. Myers' flour barrel. Ventilation for the secret "dungeon" room was cunningly provided by laying the brick walls in a zigzag pattern, so that air was admitted, but no light. George A. Wood and his wife sold this farm in 1891 shortly before the family moved to Science Hill, KY."
Unknown building most likely in or near Bethel Ohio. My parents are on the right and left. The elderly man in the middle is my father's Uncle Carl Erwin Wood. Photograph taken circa 1954 to 1958.
My parents Clifford and Saidee Wood are on left and right sides. The recently identified elderly couple in the middle are Carl Erwin Wood and his wife Venus Helen (Thompson) (Manning) Wood at their home located at 237 North Main Street, Bethel, OH. Photograph taken 1954 or 1958 Also see photograph of a man and woman believed to be from Clermont Co. in mid to late 1800s on previous page. Page updated on 29 August, 2009 |
